Celebrate Freedom By Enjoying Fourth Of July Activities At Big Elk

Rubber ducky races are just part of the Fourth of July fun planned at Big Elk Floats and Camping.

The business hosts the fireworks show every year, but is expanding the events this summer to feature duck races, kayak races and more, said Charla Brewer, of Big Elk Floats and Camping.

The new events will bring together the community and offer activities for all ages.

"We wanted to get creative," Brewer said. "We want to open our doors and welcome the community and invite them to spend the evening."

The duck races -- primarily for the youngsters -- and the kayak races, an activity for teens and adults, will begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4.

Participation entry is $2 for children, ages 12 and younger. Kayak race entry is $5 for teens and adults. Entry fees will benefit the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.

Participants who work up an appetite can enjoy a dinner, offered by Cowboy Catering Company, a Chamber member. Pulled pork or chicken, baked beans, slaw, cowboy cake and a drink will be available for $10 a plate. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce.

Cowboy Catering Company owner Monty Muehlebach is participating for the first time. He's eager to be a part of an event that will reach all ages of McDonald County neighbors.

"I'm so excited after learning that this started as a single church gathering that turned into a multiple church gathering, and now it's continuing to grow into a community event," said the barbecue owner, who also serves as pastor of Sims Church.

Muehlebach also hopes that the Puppets at the Pavilion, which will take the stage at 7 p.m., will entertain the crowd. The Operation Puppet Ministry has performed at his church, much to the delight of the youngsters.

As the night winds down and the sun sets, the fireworks show -- the main entertainment -- will begin at 9 p.m.

The festivities will take place at 5029 S. Business Highway 71, Pineville.
