Mustangs Make Clean Sweep At Monett

The McDonald County seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams made it a clean sweep at Monett on Jan. 28 with wins by both teams in both the A and B games.

In the eighth-grade A game, Cade Smith scored 15 points to lead McDonald County to a 28-19 win. The Mustangs shut out Monett in the first quarter on the way to taking an 8-0 lead. McDonald County led 19-6 at halftime and 26-14 at the end of three quarters.

Rounding out the scoring for McDonald County were Taeshaun Alik and Kevin Martinez with six points each and Kameron Hopkins with one.

In the B game, McDonald County claimed a 23-13 win. Scoring for the Mustangs was as follows: Sam Whitehill and Tryston Leach with six points each, Garrett Spears and Bryan Trejo with three each, Carlos Marcos and Arturo Garcia two each and Omar Manuel one.

Trent Alik scored 13 points to lead McDonald County to a 33-13 win in the seventh-grade game. McDonald County led 12-0 at the end of one quarter and stretched the margin to 21-3 at halftime and 28-7 entering the fourth quarter.

Rounding out the scoring for the Mustangs were Chris Arrowood with six points, Israel Marcos, Logan Renner and Parker Harris with four each and Jackson Clarkson with two.

McDonald County outscored the Cubs 2-1 in overtime to claim a 25-24 win in the B game.

The Mustangs led 6-4 after the first quarter and 11-8 at halftime before Monett came back to take a 17-15 lead entering the fourth quarter. The teams were tied 23-23 at the end of regulation.

Trayce McCool scored nine points and Austin Manwiller had eight to lead McDonald County while Shadow Keeling added four points and Bailey Lewis and Tyler Nelson had two each.

The McDonald County seventh-grade A team improves its record to 7-3 while the seventh-grade B team is now 5-2. The eighth-grade A team is 2-7 and the B team is 6-1.

McDonald County hosted Cassville on Tuesday night before traveling to Webb City on Feb. 4 to close out the regular season. The teams begin the Big 8 Conference Tournament on Feb. 6 in Mount Vernon.

Lamar

Lamar took an 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter in the eighth-grade A game and held on for a 36-33 win on Jan. 25 in Lamar.

McDonald County cut the early lead to 15-14 at halftime before each team scored six points in the third quarter for a 21-20 Tiger lead entering the fourth quarter.

Martinez led the Mustangs with 12 points. Rounding out the scoring for McDonald County were Koby McAlister with seven points, Smith with six, Taeshaun Alik and Ben Mora three each and Colliar Gottfried two.

McDonald County rebounded for a 29-20 win in the B game after building a 15-2 lead at halftime. Scoring for McDonald County was as follows: Whitehill, Trejo, Marcos and Manuel six points each, Leach with three and Spears two.

McDonald County's seventh-grade A team knocked Lamar from the ranks of the undefeated in the Big 8 Conference with a 47-44 win.

McDonald County led throughout, taking a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, a 23-20 edge at halftime and entered the fourth quarter with a 35-31 advantage.

Renner scored 12 points and Arrowood 10 to lead McDonald County. Rounding out the scoring were Trent Alik with eight points, Harris with seven, Clarkson six and Marcos four.

The eighth-grade B team rallied for a 44-27 win after falling behind 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. McDonald County bounced back to take a 25-17 lead at halftime and stretched the margin to 31-21 at the end of three quarters.

Manwiller led McDonald County with 17 points while McCool added nine, Carlos Sosa four, Keeling and Ethan Francisco two each and Lewis one.
