Youth Drowns In Elk River Boating Incident

A 12-year-old boy from Pleasanton, Kan., drowned while floating Saturday on the Elk River, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The highway patrol that Michael W. Cox was about three miles west of Pineville when swift moving water washed his canoe into a log causing it to capsize, pinning Cox under the water.

Cox was under for about 30 minutes before being freed by rescue efforts by personnel from the McDonald County Sheriff's Department. He was taken to Freeman Hospital in Neosho where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Linda Youngberg.
