MCHS Beats Carthage, Falls To Nevada

Preslea Reece and Coley Ickes combined for 38 points to lead McDonald County to a 49-36 win Jan. 15 over Carthage Lady Tigers at Carthage High School.

Reece scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds and had six steals while Ickes scored 17 points, six assists and three steals.

"We shot the ball extremely well," said coach Blake Short. "We did not miss a field goal in the first quarter. Carthage hit some shots in the first half that kept it close, but at the beginning of the second half our defense was very active and we forced several turnovers. This was a big district win and a good way to rebound from the loss."

Rounding out the scoring from McDonald County were Baili Nelson with seven points and Dakota Bunch and Cheyenne Greenup with two each.

McDonald County improves to 12-4 overall, 4-1 in the Big 8 conference, heading to its Jan. 27 contest against Webb City at MCHS.

The McDonald County junior varsity claimed a 34-13 win behind 14 points form Caitlynn Sedillos. Rounding out the scoring for McDonald County were Madison Mitchell with eight points, Madison Hall with six and Megan Mills, Kenzie Stephens and Isamar Lazalde with two each.

Nevada

Nevada avenged an earlier 13-point loss to McDonald County with a 51-34 win Jan. 13 at Nevada High School. McDonald County defeated the Lady Tigers 39-26 in the championship game of the Carl Junction tournament.

Cendy Garcia led McDonald County with 10 points while Reece and Ickes were held to six points each. Rounding out the scoring for McDonald County were Nelson and Bunch with five points each and Greenup with two points.

"We never could get going," Short said. "They are a very good team and shot the ball extremely well. We shot a low percentage and our defense didn't get as many easy baskets as we would like. We still competed, but could not get out of the hole we dug early."

Rilie Good scored 22 points and Morgan McNeley had 17 points to lead Nevada.

Nevada claimed a 34-18 win in the junior varsity game. McDonald County scoring was Kat Sparnicht with five points, Hall with four, Tricia Wattman three, Mitchell and Shawnta Baldwin two each and Sedillos and Lazalde one each.
