Master Gardeners Offering Potting Shed University In 2015

Volunteers with Master Gardeners of Greene County will again offer a series of spring-time classes for home gardeners.

Potting Shed University begins Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, and will last for 12 weeks at the Springfield Botanical Gardens in Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic Ave, in Springfield. Presented in cooperation with University of Missouri Extension of Greene County, various members of the Master Gardeners of Greene County will teach 12 diverse garden topics.

Each class will cost $5 per person, and additional information is available online at www.mggreene.org or by calling the Greene County Extension Center at 417-881-8909.

Planned Classes

Feb. 9 -- Winter Seed Sowing: each participant will plant a tiny greenhouse from a recycled and/or free container to take home;

Feb. 16 -- Hay Bale Gardening;

Feb. 23 -- Worm Composting: learn by converting a plastic storage bin into a worm composter;

March 2 -- Perennials;

March 9 -- Intro to Home Winemaking: learn the techniques of home winemaking and discuss the characteristics of Missouri's grapes;

March 16 -- All About Tomatoes;

March 23 -- Companion Planting;

March 30 -- Intro to Herbs: learn how to grow 15 of the most common culinary herbs here in southwest Missouri;

April 6 -- Planting a Water Garden: learn everything you need to know to have a successful water garden and receive detailed instructions too;

April 13 -- Attracting Butterflies to Your Garden;

April 20 -- Container Gardening;

April 27 -- Vertical Gardening;

Master Gardeners

The Master Gardener program is a popular statewide volunteer community-service organization administered through University of Missouri Extension. Master Gardeners become volunteers of MU Extension and provide educational programs, work in demonstration gardens, answer horticulture questions from the public and assist with various other community projects.
