Memorial Bench In Place At Dabbs Greer Gravesite

A fundraising drive by Grandma's Attic to purchase a memorial bench for the gravesite of an Anderson famous son, Robert William ("Dabbs") Greer, has been completed and the bench is in place at the Peace Valley Cemetery in Anderson.

The staff from Grandma's Attic took up the effort after preparing to write a blog about Greer, a native of Anderson, who went on to become a well-known and widely respected actor, including his most famous role as the Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie."

Greer also played the role of the first person saved by Superman in the first episode of the "Adventures of Superman" TV series in 1952. He went on to play the older Tom Hanks character in the movie "The Green Mile."

Greer's acting career spanned 57 years.

Canita Prough said while researching material for the blog, she visited Greer's grave at Peace Valley Cemetery and found his date of death, April 28, 2007, had not been engraved on the headstone.

"We thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and do a memorial," Prough said.

Prough added that Premier Memorials, in Anderson donated the slab holding the memorial bench.

Prough said Grandma's Attic is currently working on getting Greer inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (formerly the Cowboy Hall of Fame) in Oklahoma City, Okla.
