Lincoln Day Postponed Indefinitely

Organizers of Lincoln Day have postponed the event for now.

Chairman Sammy Helm said Tuesday that the event, which was set for April 18 at the River Ranch Resort in Noel, has been indefinitely postponed.

Gov. Mike Parson was among the list of speakers.

Helm said he coordinates the event with the Newton/Jasper coordinator. Hosting their events on the same day ensures the same speakers can make the rounds, he said.

Lincoln Day is a way of introducing political candidates in a large forum.

With the current health situation, however, the event has been postponed. Lincoln Day can draw upwards of 150 people, he said.

In past years, organizers used to host an old-fashioned rally. Helm believes that type of event, held after the primary election but before the general election, could be the way to go.

"We're leaving it open-ended," he said. "We'll have a better idea of what it looks like in a month or two."

Campaigning at this point is simply word-of-mouth and helping the candidates place signs.

The governor postponed the April 4 primary election to a June date. However, the April 4 election of delegates will continue as scheduled.

Helm said those candidates are forwarded by a central committee. Voting will take place by phone, he said.
