Mustang Powerlifting Brings Home Five Individual State Championships

The McDonald County High School boys' and girls' powerlifting teams both placed in the top 10 at Saturday's 2019 Glendale State Powerlifting Meet held at Glendale High School in Springfield.

McDonald County had five individual state champions. Three members of the girls' team -- Emily Thornton, 125 pounds; Rebecca Green, 145; and Alison Nicoletti, 175 -- joined boys' team state champs Oakley Roessler (195) and Nolen Baisch (250) as state champions.

The McDonald County boys' team took fourth place in the team standings with just 13 boys competing. Republic was first, followed by Nevada and Joplin in second and third.

The top boy placers were Kirby Townsend, seventh, 155; Huechi Xiong, eighth, 165; Mark Clements, ninth, 185; Joe Brown, second, 195; Oakley Roessler, first, 195; Kolton Blue, fourth, 210; Raphael Carbajol, 11th, 225; Micah Burkholder, second, 225; Alexis Sanchez, 10th, 250; Tanner Harnar, fifth, 250; Kaidan Campbell, second, 250; and Nolen Baisch, first, 250.

The Lady Mustangs took seventh with just five girls. Northwest, Neosho and Glendale took the top three spots.

Top individual placers for the girls were Emily Thornton, first, 125; Rebecca Green, first, 145; Jade Jackson, second, 155; Alison Nicoletti, first, 175; and Jackie Grider, fourth, 175.

McDonald County athletes recording the top lifts by weight class in one of the three lifts are as follows: Thornton, 130 bench, 250 deadlift; Green, 320 deadlift; Jackson, 305 deadlift; Nicoletti, 315 back squat, 310 deadlift; Roessler, 550 deadlift; Burkholder, 570 deadlift; Baisch, 605 back squat, 295 bench, 550 deadlift.

The Mustangs set six state records: Thornton, 130 bench; Green, 320 deadlift; Jackson, 310 deadlift; Roessler, 550 deadlift; and Burkholder, 600 deadlift.

Teams competing in addition to McDonald County were Glendale, Joplin, Lexington, Cole Camp, Seneca, Stockton, Nevada, Northwest, Lebanon, Kickapoo, Republic, Camdenton, Plattsburg, Greenfield, College Heights, Monett, Logan-Rogersville, Neosho and Willow Springs.
