Ham And Bean Feed Set For This Saturday

Organizers for the Ham and Bean feed are expecting a good crowd for the annual old-fashioned tradition, set for Saturday, Sept. 15, at Brumley and Sons Music, 5067 Route E, Powell.

Powell Historical Preservation Society board members are excited that construction on the bridge on Highway E at Powell was completed just in time for the event. The bridge opened to traffic just two weeks ago.

The ham and bean feed, hosted by the Preservation Society, will feature live music, door prizes, a rifle raffle, and bountiful bowls of ham and beans, cornbread and cake.

All proceeds go to the preservation of the 1914 historic wood and steel bridge at Powell. The society's main goal is now paving the parking area at the bridge, said Society board member Tiffany Norwood.

Ham and beans will be served, starting at 5 p.m., with the live music starting around 6. Local band, Route 358, will provide the music.

Cost for the ham and bean feed is by donation.

Fellow board member Linda Lindquist Baldwin said the popular event draws people for a number of reasons.

"The setting is beautiful and peaceful in the valley and along the creek at the Hill and Hollow grounds at Brumley Publishing Co.," she said. "There is a strong sense of community as friends, old and new, gather to raise funds to give new life to our wonderful old iron bridge which, we are proud to say, is on the National Register of Historic Places," she said. "Folks also enjoy the music and the old-fashioned ham and beans cooked in an old iron pot over an open fire."

For those interested, annual society memberships are $15 for an individual and $25 for a family.
