It took only her third start to put herself in the McDonald County High School record books.

Freshman right-hander Madeline McCall tossed a five-inning perfect game to lead the Lady Mustangs to a 10-0 win over Aurora on Sept. 6 at MCHS.

McCall allowed only six Aurora hitters to make contact, striking out nine of the 15 hitters she faced. The closest Aurora came to getting a runner aboard came in the top of the first. Kaysie Carr hit a groundball up the middle that ticked off McCall's glove to where second baseman Leslie Yousey made a sliding stop and jumped up to throw out Carr but a step.

The Lady Mustangs scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first. Chloe Colvin tripled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Whitney Kinser.

McDonald County blew the game open with five runs in the third. Rita Santillan singled to open the inning. Colvin bunted for a hit with Santillan scoring all the way from first on an overthrow. Another error led to a second run before Alexa Hopkins drove in a run with another bunt hit on a suicide squeeze. McCall singled and Kaylee Cornell walked before Yousey singled in the final two runs of the inning with a hit.

Colvin singled and scored on three consecutive walks in the fourth. McCall drove in the second run on a fielder's choice.

The Lady Mustangs ended the game on the 10-run rule in the fifth. Yousey singled and Santillan walked to put runners on first and second. Kinser drove in a run with a single before Santillan scored on a double steal to end the game.

Colvin had three hits to lead the Lady Mustangs, while Kinser, McCall and Yousey had two each.

Reeds Spring

Trailing Reeds Spring 1-0 in the sixth, Santillan hit an opposite-field home run to tie the game before the Lady Mustangs went to "small ball" to score the winning runs in the seventh for the 3-1 win.

Kinser walked to lead off the seventh. McCall's bunt for a sacrifice was instead good enough for a hit to put runners on first and second. Kristen Cornell then sacrificed to put runners at second and third. Hopkins followed with the Lady Mustangs' third straight bunt, one also that was good enough for a hit that drove in the go-ahead run. Kaylee Cornell knocked in an insurance run with a groundout.

Hopkins got the win, scattering eight hits while striking out five and walking two.

Reeds Spring's Izzy Erickson held the Lady Mustangs to three hits, the bunts by McCall and Hopkins and Santillan's home run.

Neosho

McDonald County jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings over Neosho and then had to hold on for a 3-2 win on Sept. 10 at MCHS.

Alexa Hopkins led McDonald County on the mound and at the plate. The sophomore right-hander went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking none.

Hopkins was also the only Lady Mustang to get multiple hits, singling in the third and rocketing a double off the right-centerfield fence in the seventh.

McDonald County scored two runs in the first. Rita Santillan doubled to lead off the game. Chloe Colvin then singled to short left with Santillan beating a throw to third. Colvin kept running after reaching first base and drew a wild throw at second, allowing Santillan to score. Whitney Kinser drove in the second run of the inning with a one-out single.

McDonald County scored the eventual winning run in the third. Madeline McCall singled, stole second and scored on a single by Leslie Yousey.

Neosho cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on back-to-back singles to open the inning. A bunt moved runners along before Maddie Carpenter hit a fly ball to center to drive in a run.

The Lady Tigers closed to 3-2 in the sixth on two errors and a single.

McDonald County was at Seneca on Sept. 11 before returning home to host Nevada on Sept. 13. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
