MCHS Opens the Season at the Neosho Warm-up

Thursday, September 6, 2018

The McDonald County High School boys' and girls' cross country teams opened their 2018 season on Saturday at the Neosho Warm-up, a two-mile race instead of the normal 3.1-mile cross country standard distance.

McDonald County was led by a win in the girls' race from freshman Kalyn Stetina. She covered the two-mile course in a time of 13:35 to beat Neosho's Destiny Colston by 21 seconds.

Stetina was the only girl to participate for the Lady Mustangs. Coach Rustan Crockett said other girls on the team were either nursing injuries, never had the required 14 practices to participate in a race or were held out after missing practice this week.

The McDonald County boys' team had eight runners, led by Garrett Spears who finished in fifth place in a time of 10:59. Jackson Behm and Bryce Berryhill also cracked the top 10. Behm was seventh at 11:06, while Berryhill was 10th in 11:11.

Rounding out the McDonald County results were: Tyler Moritz, 16th, 12:40; Justin Smith, 20th, 13:42; Garrett Anderson, 21st, 13:42; Eli Jackson, 22nd, 13:55; and Matthew McCall, 30th, 17:47.

Kaden Cole of Neosho won the boys' race in a time of 10:37.

In addition to runners from McDonald County and Neosho, schools participating included Jasper, Thomas Jefferson Academy and Diamond.
