City Officials May Consider Grants With Planning, Zoning Committee In Place

With a new planning and zoning committee in place, the city of Goodman is now prepared to seek grants toward community betterment.

Goodman mayor, Greg Richmond, said city officials were fortunate to have several residents show interest in serving.

The committee's members were appointed following the regular city council meeting on Oct. 16.

Keith Estes was appointed chairman; Greg Beckner, acting chair; and Jared Mackall, secretary. Other members include Calvin Wilson, Ron Johnson, Ed Tuomala and Jerry Pierce.

The appointments are part of an overall plan for the city to move forward. City officials recently completed the first step -- a comprehensive plan -- which was produced and led by the Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council.

HSTCC officials also ask city officials to implement a new planning and zoning committee, if the city doesn't already have one in place. That is the final component of the plan which enables officials to apply for grants.

Goodman city officials are pleased to have the committee in place but don't believe members will face pressing business in coming weeks.

"There's nothing in the foreseeable future unless someone requests rezoning or rebuilding," Richmond said.

Committee members have set their first official meeting in December. Members have yet to discuss if they'll meet monthly or only when the need arises, according to Richmond.

After the first of the year, city officials may begin looking at grants, he said.

It's not clear if this is the first-ever planning and zoning committee or if it's the first active one in quite a while.

Richmond said he is glad that several residents showed an interest in serving, a task that is sometimes difficult in a small town.

With several goals reached, city officials are looking toward the future.

"With the comprehensive plan finished, and the planning and zoning committee in place, things are in line. The next logical step is to see what's out there," Richmond said.
