At Tuesday's meeting of the Pineville City Council, a Pineville resident said she is planning on building a bed-and-breakfast on the square.
Elizabeth Gajdos Potolicchio, a transplant from Texas to Pineville, said she and her partner are in the real estate business, and they saw a building on the square that is boarded up. They talked to Pineville residents about needs in the area and have envisioned a two-story bed-and-breakfast with a restaurant. They plan to tear down the existing building. She said they specialize in preserving buildings but, in this case, it would cost more to preserve it than to tear it down and start over.
Alderman Ann Crowder-Sanders said, "That building had a gas explosion years ago and it's in poor, poor, poor condition." She added she is glad they are thinking of tearing it down.
Gajdos Potolicchio said work will probably begin in January.
The council voted to change its meeting from the third Tuesday of the month to the second Tuesday of the month.
The council also voted to let the Harry S. Truman Council prepare a grant for trails for the city. Mayor Gregg Sweeten said the Harry S. Truman Council has helped the city get grants in the past. The cost for the grant will be $2,090. The council approved an ordinance authorizing a contract with the Harry S. Truman Council to prepare a five-year comprehensive plan for the city. The cost of the plan will be $5,040.
The council revisited the subject of a bathroom for the new bike park. Sweeten told the council the fire department is looking to get rid of the old cook shack, which is 9 by 18. It would need to be re-sided, he said.
Alderman Scott Dennis said the bike park is too nice to put something like that in it, and the other council members agreed.
Betty Mitchell of Pineville was appointed and sworn in as a resident representative of the housing authority.
Larry Henson of Havenhurst told the council that the speed limit sign is twisted so that people cannot read it, and people drive too fast in the area.
Sweeten told the council he has found a lady who will paint the old welcome sign. She will paint the new welcome sign oval on it, and he thought she could paint some attractions below that. She will paint both sides for $500.
Alderman Becky Davis said she would be anxious to see a mock-up.
