Noel Woman's Club Met May 8

Thursday, May 17, 2018

The May 8 meeting of the Noel Woman's Club was called to order by President Melissa. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Lord's Prayer, the club welcomed Kimberly Bell, speaker for the evening. She is a 25-year veteran of the Army Reserve and gave a most interesting talk on military life and her time in Afghanistan.

Citizens owe these folks a huge debt of gratitude on what they do. Kimberly was thanked for her service. Her husband and some of her family members were there to support her.

Roll call was answered with 13 members present. Minutes were read and approved with two corrections. The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Bonnie.

It was noted that Kayla Reese, the club's youngest member, was mentioned in the Joplin Globe for being on the academic honor roll. She was congratulated by the club.

Linda brought up a question concerning clarification on scholarships.

Dot had the signup sheet for sitting at the Noel Cemetery Memorial Day weekend. She suggested shorter hours and the club do it on the Friday before Memorial Day through Monday. The motion passed. The new times will be 9:30 to 12, 12 to 2:30 and 2:30 until 5. The Woman's Club sits at the cemetery during Memorial Day Weekend and collects donations for the upkeep of the cemetery. Those unable to come by the cemetery who wish to donate may mail their donation to the Noel Woman's Club, P.O. Box 764, Noel, MO 64854. This money is all turned over to the cemetery board for upkeep.

Louine said Noel Elementary School is having a benefit to raise money for the newly forming PTO. The Woman's Club will donate two baskets for the silent auction. Vicki and Melissa will each put a basket together for it.

May 15 is the ceremony for the scholarships to be presented at the high school. Linda will be there to present the two scholarships that the Woman's Club is giving out at graduation ceremonies on May 19 -- to Kayla Reese and Esmeralda Garcia Ramirez.

Barb said the First Lady of Missouri, Sheena Chestnut Greitens, is giving away children's books for children in the foster-care program. Barb will make application for these so that the Woman's Club can include them in its Christmas Stockings it gives to the foster children of McDonald County.

It was noted the Noel Betterment Association is sponsoring "First Friday's in Noel" beginning June 1. Food trucks, vendor booths and more will be set up on the lot next to Arvest Bank the first Friday of June, July and August.

The hostesses for the evening were Linda and Jo. They served a delicious taco salad and a wonderful coconut dessert.
