Four area youth were treated to a duck hunt in the first weekend of January. The hunt, organized by Young Outdoorsmen United, for youth ages 8 to 15, included an educational class covering duck identification, decoys, gun safety and duck calling instructions. Each youth made his own duck call and was encouraged to practice. Participants were selected through a random drawing process.

The actual hunt was divided into two morning sessions, with two hunters on each outing. Both mornings, the young hunters all bagged ducks and witnessed an excellent display of a retrieving dog in action. After each hunt, they were given a hands-on demonstration on how to prepare the game bird for a hearty meal.

Special volunteers Trevyn Faulkner, Shawn Stillions and Matt Cole from the McDonald County chapter of Ducks Unlimited assisted with the training and provided equipment and location of the hunts. All three worked hard to ensure the kids had a fun and successful hunt.

Young Outdoorsmen United organization is based in McDonald County with a goal to "Build opportunities for youth and families to enjoy the outdoors through hunting, fishing and other related activities" and has an event each and every month of the year.
