Seventh-Grade Boys Take Second Place

The McDonald County seventh-grade boys' basketball team had to settle for second place in the Big 8 Conference tournament after dropping a 39-38 overtime decision to Lamar in the championship game on Feb. 8 in Lamar.

McDonald County took a 10-6 lead at halftime and led 17-15 at halftime before Lamar took a 24-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

Trailing by two late in the game, McDonald County's Weston Gordon forced overtime with a short jumper.

Dalton McClain led McDonald County with 15 points, followed by Braxton Spears with eight, Sterling Woods seven, Gordon five and Isaac Behm three.

McDonald County finishes its season with a 9-7 record.

Aurora

McDonald County advanced to the championship game with a 34-31 win over Aurora in the semifinals.

The teams were tied 16-16 at halftime before McDonald County took a 22-18 lead after three periods.

Gordon led the way with 22 points. Rounding out the scoring for the Mustangs were Woods with seven points, McClain three and Behm two.

East Newton

McDonald County opened the tournament with a 27-21 win over East Newton.

The Mustangs led just 15-13 after three quarters before outscoring the Patriots 12-8 in the fourth period.

Woods led McDonald County with 10 points, followed by McClain with nine, Gordon five and Jack Parnell three
