Local chef Erin Rowe will speak about her new book featuring Ozark food, history and traditions, at the Feb. 8 McDonald County Back to Basics Community Group meeting.
Rowe, of Northwest Arkansas, recently released a book, "An Ozark Culinary History: Northwest Arkansas Traditions from Corn Dodgers to Squirrel Meatloaf." The book was published by The History Press and released in September.
Rowe received her education at Hendrix College and through the University of Hawaii Maui College Culinary Arts Program but says she mainly learned to cook through trial and error.
Rowe holds classes in food-related topics. She leads private in-home cooking classes and group classes at Honeycomb Kitchen Shop in Rogers.
The Back to Basic's meeting will begin with a potluck at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8. Rowe will speak at 7:30 p.m. The group will meet at the New Mac Community Room, on old Highway 71, just north of the McDonald County High School, in Anderson, said B2B president and founder Robin Killion.
The organization's planning committee, made up of several members, meets to determine guest speakers and entertainment, Killion said. Planning member Nancy Rowse suggested hosting Rowe as a guest speaker after meeting her at a Bella Vista, Ark., crafts fair, said Nancy's husband, Paul, who also serves as a planning member.
After Rowe speaks, those on hand will be treated to entertainment provided by McDonald County High School Band students. Members will host a spare change drive for their next trip in March.
Meetings conclude around 8:30 p.m.
The McDonald County Back to Basics Community Group (B2B) was formed in 2008 as a grassroots effort to combine education, information, community services and a social outlet so members can support each other in good times and bad. The meetings are free and open to all, including surrounding communities.
