Students Gain Hands-On Experience Through Class

Thursday, February 1, 2018

Students in McDonald County's Pro Start classes get a hands-on education in the kitchen, an experience they can take with them out in the real world.

Teacher Marie Strader said the class and its curriculum is sanctioned by the National Restaurant Association. Students complete the two-year class, as well as 400 hours in food service, and are expected to take a 100-question test at the class' conclusion.

The minimum passing grade is 70 percent.

Through the class, students also gain experience in catering for events in school.

Those who complete the class and pass the test earn college credit in culinary arts, Strader said.
