Zack Woods made it two for two so far during the 2018 track season.

Woods, a junior at McDonald County High School, cleared 12-6.25 to win the pole vault at the Carthage Invitational held March 29 at Carthage High School.

Woods opened his season by winning the Mustang Stampede on March 22 with a personal best of 13-0, but a cold, north wind hampered all the vaulters at Carthage. Woods edged Gabriel Avila of Joplin by a quarter of an inch in a jump-off for first place.

Led by Woods' win, McDonald County took sixth place out of 12 teams in the team competition, with 36 points. Carthage took first, with 170 points, followed by Webb City, Willard, Joplin, Lamar, McDonald County, Monett, East Newton, Grove, Nevada, Morrilton and Marshfield.

Sophomore sprinter Corbin Jones added a third place for the Mustangs by running an 11.42 in the 100 meters.

Sophomore Michael Williams placed in three events but scored in just two. Williams was fifth in the long jump (20-09.5) and eighth in the triple jump (38-11.75), but his seventh place in the high jump (5-8) tied with four others and Williams missed out on scoring due to the number of misses.

Rounding out the scoring places for the Mustangs were Elliott Wolfe, fifth, shot put, 43-7.5, and eighth, javelin, 123-01; Cole DelosSantos, sixth, 300 hurdles, 43:55; Bucky Harrell, seventh, triple jump, 39-1; and Peyton Barton, eighth, discus, 125-3.

Girls

Ragan Wilson's second place in the 400-meter run (1:05.39) was the best finish for the McDonald County girls.

Ruby Palomo, Jordan Witt and Addy Mick all placed in two events. Palomo was fourth in the 100 hurdles (18:22) and eighth in the 300 hurdles (53:77), while Witt was sixth in the triple jump (32-3) and tied for eighth in the high jump (4-4) but did not score due to misses.

Mick took eighth in the 1600 (6:00.61) and ran a leg of the 4x100 relay that took eighth (55.58). Other members of the relay were Caitlyn Barton, Erin Cooper and Rita Santillan.

Webb City won the girls' title with 112.4 points, while McDonald County finished in 11th with 29.

McDonald County's next meet was set for April 3 at Neosho. The Lady Mustangs are in Springfield on April 5, and the boys go to Springfield on April 6.
