Junior High teams pick up wins

The McDonald County eighth-grade football cruised to a 42-12 win over Cassville on Sept. 28 at Cassville High School to remain undefeated with a 4-0 record on the season.

It took McDonald County just over 10 seconds to jump out in front when Jakobe Montes returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Cole Martin then hit Levi Malone for a two-point conversion to give the Mustangs an early 8-0 lead.

Bo Leach scored on a 25-yard run on McDonald County's next possession to stretch the lead to 14-0.

Cassville cut the lead to 14-6 before Martin scored on a one-yard sneak and then hit Malone for a 15-yard touchdown just before half. Eli McClain caught a pass for the two-point conversion to give McDonald County a 28-6 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, Leach scored on an 11-yard run with Junior Eliam running in the conversion. Eliam closed out the scoring for McDonald County with a 50-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter before Cassville scored late to make the final score 42-14.

In the seventh-grade game, Cassville jumped out to an 18-0 lead before hanging on for an 18-14 win.

Sterling Woods hit Weston Gordon with a pair of second-half touchdowns and one two-point conversion to get McDonald County within striking distance. The first TD pass covered 51 yards while the second was from 40 yards out.

The seventh-graders fall to 1-3 for the season.

Both teams face Aurora on Oct. 5 at MCHS. The seventh-grade begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the eighth-grade game.

Cross Country

Dawson Wolff finished in 16th place out of 176 entrants to lead the McDonald County junior high school cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Lamar Cross Country Championships held Sept. 25 at Lamar High School.

Isaac Behm was second for McDonald County in 23rd place followed by Levi Smith in 27th, Hunter Leach 32nd, Remington Ziemianin 43rd, Andrew Moritz 108th, Cross Spencer 115th, Daniel Fox 116th, Eli Jackson 125th, Eli Jordan 131st, Matthew McCall 133rd, Cody Dumond 135th and Mark Wilson 174th.

Titus Thompson of Ozark edged Kelton Sorrell of East Newton for individual honors while Sorrell led East Newton to the team championship.

Kalyn Stetina led the McDonald County girls' team to seventh place in the team standings while taking fourth place overall.

Second for McDonald County was Haley Mick in 52nd place followed by Alexis Wahlberg 57th, Haley Walczak 71st, Hailey Staib 75th, Ebony Munoz 76th, Britany Akins 106th and Madison Kopejtka 133rd.

East Newton also won the girls team title. Ally Montez of Carl Junction won the individual championship.

Volleyball

The McDonald County eighth-grade volleyball team defeated Monett 25-13, 25-23 on Sept. 28 at Monett High School.

The seventh grade added a 25-16, 25-15 win.

Monett claimed a 25-21, 25-18 win in the eighth-grade B match while the teams split the two games in the seventh-grade B match. McDonald County won the first game 25-22 before Monett evened the match with a 25-20 win in the second game.
