More Peace and Less Stuff

Becky Johnson and Terry Lett were celebrating birthdays as we gathered to worship Sunday morning at Mill Creek Baptist Church. Special prayers were requested for Rodney Allison, the Chrisman family and the Rosillo family, travel prayers and hunter safety.

"More Peace and Less Stuff" was the devotional as Linda Abercrombie read Luke 12:27. Linda talked about hedonic adaptation or the treadmill. We keep buying things and keep running farther and faster to find happiness, just like being on a treadmill. Owning lots of stuff works against our peace and happiness. We keep wanting more and more. Downsize, live life more simply and focus on people and things you truly care about.

Becky Johnson and Karen Gardner led the congregational hymns "Come and Dine" and "The Gloryland Way," with special music from Karen. Rick Lett and Wayne Johnson served as offertory ushers.

Lawrence Shuey filled in at the pulpit for Brother Mark and brought us God's word. Scripture for the message was from 1 Samuel 17 about one of the most familiar stories in the Bible, David and Goliath. Brother Shuey talked about the Biblical story and how it applies to the current day and time. Just as the Philistines faced off with Israel, with Goliath on one side and David on the other, today we have God's people vs. a God-defying army. In verse 29, David asked what the cause of the battle was.

Brother Shuey said, "In our country and culture today, there are some similarities with the David and Goliath battle. There is a movement against God's people. As Christians, are we doing anything about it? Are we cowering from God's cause, with the attitude and mockery of Christians today? There is a negative attitude that others have toward Christians and God's cause. Goliath and the Philistine's attitude toward God's people were the same. The opponents of Christianity today are the same as Goliath and their gods."

Brother Shuey read Leviticus 18:20-22 and talked about some of the problems in our world and society today. "Don't do what pagans do. The culture around us has accepted things we need to stand against ... the armies of Satan. The devil is the inspiration for bad in the world. We worry about political correctness and are policed for what we say when Christians stand up for what is God's will and way. As Christians, we need to speak out and stand up for God. But before we can do that, we need to be sure about our own relationship with God. We need to be on His side. Then be ready to take a stand. There are a lot of Goliaths out there. We need to make sure we are the Davids of today and face the enemy. There is a cause to stand up for God. March forward toward the forces of evil."

Our hymn of invitation was "Where He Leads Me." Wayne gave the benediction. We invite you to worship with us Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. at Mill Creek Baptist Church. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m.

Join us next Sunday and thank God for your many blessings during this Thanksgiving time.
