McDonald County neighbors will have the opportunity to learn more about their heritage during an educational and fun, family-friendly event this weekend at the Pineville Square.

The McDonald County Historical Society will host its fifth annual "History Live," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.

McDonald County Historical Society President Lynn Tatum said volunteers have expanded demonstrations and added activities for this year's event. She hopes more families will attend the History Live event to learn more about their heritage.

"As children grow proud of their heritage by getting in touch with the rich and unique history of McDonald County, they are strengthened and inspired to carry on a set of wonderful values," Tatum said.

"The people of McDonald County help one another in times of tragedy and need and they work hard every day. They pay attention to growing strong families and are not afraid of being creative and sharing their talents. I continue to be humbled by these strong and wonderful people."

Those on hand will be able to observe several demonstrations, including quilters, blacksmiths, spinners, gardeners, campfire cooks, and pioneer laundry women.

The day will feature several demonstrations and various activities. Mike Freund of the "Blacksmith Friends of Newtonia" will show how to fashion a horseshoe, Karen Almeter will demonstrate spinning wool and Dr. Larry Quinalty, a ranger from Roaring River State Park, will give out samples of chuck wagon cooking.

Jetta McCormick of Anderson, representing Master Gardeners, will show McDonald County primitive plants.

The Historical Society Museum will open for the season and feature several new exhibits. The Secession Room has been completely revamped, thanks to volunteer Christina Luhn. The Strawberry Room will include the history of agriculture in McDonald County and the Military Room will feature new exhibits.

Entertainment will include a children's choir, which will be featured at 10 a.m. on the bandstand. Amber Nelson will perform at 11 a.m., the live auction and pie auction will take place at noon, and the Tar Top Travelers will perform at 1 p.m.

The drawing for the Doug Hall print will take place at 2 p.m.

The balloon man will be on hand to entertain as well.
