Woods Heads To Championships

Zack Woods will be the McDonald County High School track team at Saturday's Missouri Class 4 Sectional 3 Track and Field Championships at Eldon High School.

Woods finished third in the pole vault at the Missouri Class 4 District 6 Track and Field Championships on May 13 at Carl Junction for McDonald County's only athlete to reach a qualifying position, in his case a fourth-place finish.

Woods, who won a conference title on May 4 with a vault of 12-3, set a personal best of 13-0 to punch his ticket to sectionals. Sam Repsher won the event with a vault of 15-3.

Teammate Huechi Xiong added a sixth-place finish in the vault by clearing 11-6. Of McDonald County's 19 team points, nine came in the pole vault.

Senior Shane Russo and the Mustangs' 4x800 relay came the closest to joining Woods as sectional qualifiers.

Russo finished in fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 41-9.5. Earning the final qualifying spot in fourth place was Dylan Pruiett of Carthage with a jump of 42.3. Pruiett's teammate Arkell Smith had the longest jump, a leap of 44-2.5 to win the event.

The 4x800 relay of Truman Craig, Alex Guadarrama, Drew Landers and David Lazalde also finished fifth. Glendale took fourth in a time of 8:46.5 while the Mustangs finished in a time of 9:00.22.

Carthage won the race in 8:06.83.

McDonald County's other points came from an eighth-place finish by Cole DelosSantos in the 300 hurdles (45.47) and an eighth by Landers in the 400 (54.31).

Carthage won the boy's team title with 153 points with Webb City finishing in second with 125 points. Third went to Carl Junction with 110 points followed by West Plains with 79.5, Glendale 53, Parkview 49.5, Logan-Rogersville 48.5, Monett 48, Neosho 44.5, McDonald County 19, Nevada 8 and Aurora 3.

Girls

Jordan Witt, Chloe Teague, the 4x800 relay team, were the closest of the Lady Mustangs to advance.

Witt took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 33-3.75 while fourth place went to Karlee Kinder of Carthage with a jump of 33-5.75. Kenya Medlock of Carthage won the event with a jump of 33-7.5, a difference of less than four inches separating first and fifth.

Teague took fifth in the pole vault by clearing 8-6. Fourth place went to Lily Pyle with a vault of 9-0. Elleigh Spragg of Logan Rogersville won the event by clearing 11-6.

The 4x800 relay of Cassadi Dowd, Addy Mick, Adyson Sanny and Ragan Wilson finished in fifth in a time of 10:40.0. Fourth went to Logan-Rogersville in 10:10.2 while Carl Junction won the race in 9:55.0.

The same four girls added an eighth place for the Lady Mustangs in the 4x400 (4:34.22).

Other McDonald County girls to score include Ruby Palomo-Martinez who took seventh in the 100 hurdles (18.07). Bailey Rickett came off an injury to take eighth in the high jump (4-8) and Emily Landers was eighth in the javelin (94-11).

The top two places were reversed in the girls division with Webb City in first with 146 points followed Carthage in second with 113 points. West Plains was third with 91 points followed by Logan-Rogersville 88, Carl Junction 85, Monett 59, Parkview 52, Nevada 46, Neosho 33, McDonald County 17, Aurora 6 and Glendale 3.
