Zero Positive Drug Screens, Board Learns

Of the 750 random drug tests given over the school year, zero students tested positive, according to McDonald County High School athletics director Nick Martin.

"The people who did it said that doesn't happen. Very rare," Martin told the School Board during a meeting June 8.

Dr. Scott Goldstein, board president, said, "It talks very well about our students and their families."

The board decided to stay with Controlled Technology Solutions as the builder for the business center project, which will be a remodel of the old ROTC building. At its last meeting, the board had considered using a general contractor instead.

The board approved a resolution to make a $400,000 prepayment on existing debt to reduce the district's interest payment.

Maintenance Supervisor Bob Campbell gave a report on summer maintenance projects. He said his main project is getting central office repaired from flood damage. He said his crews have finished sheet rock and painting and still have to do mill work, doors and carpet.

"We're scheduled around the Fourth of July to put in carpet. Big change. You won't recognize the place. My goal is to have the July board meeting there," he said.

In other business, the board considered putting out a request for qualifications for a company to do tech services within the district. However, the board learned, most technology companies require a commitment of at least five years. The board had concerns about finances and enrollment.

"Five years is a long period of time and there's a lot of unknowns," Goldstein said.

"We want to make sure everybody understands we are committed to improving technology," Superintendent Dr. Mark Stanton said. "These companies are wanting a larger commitment than we are comfortable (with)."
