Crews Set To Work On Bike Park Trail

Pineville officials are beginning the second phase for helping neighbors play, have fun and get healthy as part of a new initiative.

The new Pineville bike park, which is open to adults and children of all ages, opened July 8. Now, officials are beginning work on a bike trail to connect the bike park to the town's city limits.

Those who use the new trail will be able to walk or bike.

The trail will connect the bike park, down Sugar Creek Road to the corner a few hundred yards from the bridge on Eighth Street, said Progressive Bike Ramps president John Hunter.

Hunter, whose company designed the bike park, is overseeing all aspects of the trail's construction and design. He explained the trail will not be linear, but have rollers and berms to make it "more interesting."

Officials believe the initiative will entice others to exercise more, while alleviating a mix of bike traffic with car traffic along the road to the bike park.

Work will begin soon on the trail, which will cost $18,000 to build. Officials eventually want the trail to connect to the trail at the Pineville ball park.

Specialty crews will come in to work on the trail. Hunter said the same crew that did work for former NFL quarterback David Carr will be on hand to carve out the path.

Crew members will be on site Aug. 7. With weather permitting, the trail will take about two weeks of construction to complete.

"We're going to fly in a couple of guys from Europe," Hunter said. The trail will be "super, super cool," he added.

Officials want to add other features to the bike park, including restrooms, landscaping, trees and more.

Pineville aldermen have discussed adding speed limit signs on the road leading out to the bike park, which is east of town.
