Council Votes To Repair Rusted Waterline

Thursday, July 13, 2017

During Southwest City's council meeting June 27, Public Works Director Jackie Coatney provided the council with prices to bore a hole under the highway at the junction of Route J and Highway 43. A rusted water line under the road is leaking on both sides, he said.

One person inspected the site and bid $2,200 to repair the leak, using their own equipment.

Contractor Junior Drake suggested cabling through the pipe, then pulling the defunct pipe out and replacing it.

"If it fails, you could bore anyway and connect any affected clients to a temporary tank while repairs are underway," Drake said.

He spoke about a Hole-Hawg, which would allow the city to bore in the future, for a similar price.

The council voted to pursue repair through Drake at a minimum cost of $300.

City Clerk Missy Zinn will need to determine the water usage of client's connected to the line in order to provide adequate storage in the event the pipe breaks during removal.

Departmental Reports

Coatney also provided the council with comparative pricing for Water Department supplies.

The council approved the purchase of one load of cold-patch to repair ever-growing potholes.

The council chose not to replace the blades on the city's mower due to this year's tight budget.

Police Chief Bud Gow was absent, but his reports indicate the department's new vehicle is undergoing speaker installation and should be in commission soon.

Zinn spoke about turning off the WiFi at the Fire Department when court isn't in session to prevent people from abusing the service.

She also informed the council of a free Workman's Compensation/Employee Code class on July 14 in Branson. She offered to attend at no cost to the city besides regularly scheduled work hours. The council approved her attendance at this class.

In other business:

• Zinn provided the council with a copy of the yearly budget and the city's revenue and expenses for the second quarter.

• The council discussed preparations for the Third of July celebration.
