Board Recognizes Student Accomplishments

The McDonald County School District Board of Education took a moment at its April 13 meeting to recognize student accomplishments.

High School Principal Greg Leach introduced Alexus Brock, the school's first four-time conference champion in debate.

"I don't know that we've ever had a more distinguished student that has received more accolades than Alexus has," he said. "She is our most accomplished debater in the history of the school."

The board learned that the FCCLA culinary team that won the state championship was made up of sophomores who were the only sophomores in the contest.

DECA took nine students to district and each came in either first or second. They were state champions and five of the students qualified for nationals.

Skills USA was also recognized for being another state championship team from the high school.

Beth Buckingham was sworn in as a new board member following the April 4 election. Dr. Scott Goldstein was elected board president. Frank Woods was elected vice president. Chris Smith was elected treasurer.

Al Willis of Controlled Technology Solutions, the district's builder, gave an update on the bus barn. He said the project is nearing the finish line with just a few finishing touches and cleanup being done. It will hopefully be done by the next board meeting, he said.

John Kelsh of CTS gave an update on the Business Industrial Center, which is an upgrade to the old ROTC building. He said the interior upgrades would include vaulted ceilings and carpet. Willis said the upgrades would include tile and new windows. The total renovated area will be 7,500 square feet, he said.

"We want to build a facility that will be great for kids," Superintendent Dr. Mark Stanton said. "We obviously want to always get the best possible price we can, because every dollar counts."

The FCCLA culinary team asked permission to go to a national culinary event in Nashville, Tenn., in July. FCCLA teacher Debbie Shaffer said if they compete and win she is pretty sure they will be he only sophomores to ever win at nationals. The board approved the trip.

Skills USA also asked permission to go to a national convention in Louisville, Ky. The board approved this trip as well.

In other business, the board heard the first reading of a proposed policy from the Missouri School Board Association in which schools would have to pay tuition for students enrolled in dual-credit courses.
