Veterinary Feed Directive Meeting Nov. 10 in West Plains

Missouri Extension Service

WEST PLAINS -- January 1, 2017, is the deadline for the Veterinary Feed Directive implemented by the FDA.

Over the past several years, the Food and Drug Administration has taken important steps toward fundamental change in how medically important antibiotics can be legally used in feed or water for food-producing animals.

Now, the agency is moving to eliminate to use of such drugs for production purposes (i.e., growth promotion and feed efficiency) and bring their remaining therapeutic uses in feed and water under the supervision of licensed veterinarians.

The Veterinary Feed Directive will consequently be instituted January 1, 2017.

To inform livestock producers regarding how the Veterinary Feed Directive will affect their operations, University of Missouri State Extension Veterinarian, Dr. Craig Payne, will explain the new directive that will control the use of antibiotics in animal feeds and supplements.

A free informational session will begin at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Howell County Extension office, 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd. West Plains.

To register call the Howell County Extension center at 417-256-2391.
