Beef Production On Small Acreage Class Coming

GALENA -- "Beef Production on Small Acreage" is the title of a workshop being offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Galena Library, 106 E. Fifth St.

This session, which is part of the "Grow the Grower" program, will focus on evaluating land resources and looking at the market potential for raising beef animals on small acreages in southwest Missouri. There is a cost of $5 per person for the class.

Instruction will be provided by Eldon Cole, a livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension and Tim Schnakenberg, agronomy specialist with MU Extension.

"The program will provide an overview on how to manage forages for efficient pasture use, how to select breeding stock, feeding and managing livestock and evaluating marketing opportunities for small acreages," said Schnakenberg.

This workshop is the second in a series of workshops for produce farmers and others interested in local foods. For additional information or to register, contact Sara Wikoff at [email protected] or call 417-334-4544 ext 252 to register.

Growing the Grower project has scholarships available for qualifying individuals. The funding is available through the Taney County Health Department in collaboration with the Ozarks Wellness Network. Scholarships must be used to attend a reputable agricultural conference within the state of Missouri.

Eligible participants can receive up to one scholarship per year. Funds are available on a first come first serve basis and are limited. Preference will go to producers that reside in Stone or Taney County. However, producers in other counties are still encouraged to apply.
