SWC Board Rejects Bond Vote

During the Jan. 12 meeting, the viability of a bond to help fund the Water Department and possibility of placing the item on the April ballot was brought before Southwest City's Board of Aldermen. The council voted not to put the bond to a vote, opting instead to continue working towards a revenue generating water rate.

The council also denied an inquiry concerning the purchase of city property north of town. City Clerk Teri Thorpe asked the council on behalf of Thomas Gordon if they would sell the half-acre lot the city owns on Bluebird Lane.

Departmental Reports

Police Chief Bud Gow reported the Police Department has completed three reports and responded to six requests for agency assistance since the last meeting.

In a closed meeting, the council discussed Chief Gow's authority during the hiring process of potential officers. It was determined that he can decide if any person wishing to become a commissioned officer is desirable for the position.

Fire Chief Shane Clark reported three water rescues, and five road obstructions due to recent flooding.

As Public Works director, he noted that the Street Department has been working to remove Christmas decorations and clean up roadways, ditches, and driveways throughout town that were damaged by the flood.

Clark also brought up the possibility of selling the city's vacuum truck due to lack of use. The council voted to sell the vehicle to the highest bidder.

In other business:

• Judy Pendergraft, city Tax Collector, spoke about yearly tax abatement figures.

• Jerry Ware asked, via Thorpe, if the council would post signs reading "NO SEMI TRUCKS" on Poplar Street behind Southwest Creations LLC, located north of the city.

• The council voted to pay bills in the amount of $45,377.26.
