Pineville Walking Trail Topic During Council

Former Pineville resident Marcy Camacho addressed the council regarding plans for a walking trail in Pineville.

Mayor Gregg Sweeten and council members noted that they have been discussing the walking trail, what it will cost, where it will be located, and if it should be a walking trail only or if bikes and skateboards will be allowed.

Camacho suggested that the track be divided so that there would be separate areas for different activities -- one for bikes and skateboards, another for walking and running. Camacho provided the council with information regarding types of bike racks which would be appropriate for the trail. Sweeten said two racks would cost approximately $1,100.

Alderman Scott Dennis noted that perhaps it should be a walking trail only.

Juan Camacho suggested that, initially, it could be a walking trail and expanded later for other purposes such as bikes.

Dennis noted that liabilities be considered regarding the use of the trail after it is completed.

Upcoming events for Pineville Square were discussed, including a 10k relay from the Square to Anderson on April 15. Sweeten said law enforcement and the fire departments will be there to monitor.

A resolution concerning voluntary annexation of Pleasant Ridge Road into the city was approved by the council.

Jake Heispen from state Rep. Billy Long's office in Joplin sat in on the council meeting.

Sweeten noted that there are detrimental effects upon Missouri's small towns as a result of passage of Senate Bill 5, which decreased the amount of revenue they can collect for traffic violations. Other council members also indicated that the fallout and problems regarding what happened at Ferguson, Mo., is adversely affecting small towns in Missouri.

Sweeten noted that the governor has forwarded documentation for help due to the flooding in Pineville to President Obama for his signature -- but he has not yet signed it. Sweeten said there was approximately $70,000 worth of flood damage in Pineville.

Pineville Marshal Chris Owens said his office will start painting their work areas soon.

The council discussed and approved bills in the amount of $36,652.36.
