Workshop Set On Impact Of Veterinary Feed Directive

HOUSTON -- Over the past several years, the Food and Drug Administration has taken important steps toward fundamental change in how medically important antibiotics can be legally used in feed or water for food-producing animals.

The agency is now moving to eliminate the use of such drugs for production purposes (i.e., growth promotion and feed efficiency) and bring their remaining therapeutic uses in feed and water under the supervision of licensed veterinarians.

The Veterinary Feed Directive will be instituted Jan. 1, 2017.

Dr. Craig Payne, a University of Missouri State Extension veterinarian, will explain the new directive and its impact on the use of antibiotics in animal feeds and supplements.

The same program will be offered at the following locations.

• August 22, 2106, 6 p.m. Texas County Extension Center, 114 W. Main St., Houston, Mo. Telephone: (417) 967-4545

• August 23, 2016, 6 p.m. MSU Fruit Experiment Station, 9740 Red Springs Road, Mountain Grove, Mo. Telephone: (417) 547-7545

Topics will include an explanation of VFD, what the requirement of the directive are, the use of antibiotics in feed and supplements, as well as their effects on animal health.

This program is being offered free of charge by the Texas County University of Missouri Extension Council. For more information, contact the Extension Center at 417-967-4545.
