Homecoming Events Slated

Special to McDonald County Press

Excitement is building for this year's "Meet Me Downtown!" street fair and fall sports/homecoming celebration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 9, on Main Street and Town Hole Park in Anderson.

Activities include a street fair with food and retail vendors, a parade, pep rally, and a bonfire.

The parade will start around 6 p.m. Expect a variety of floats, homecoming queen candidates, the marching band, cheerleaders and the fall sports teams.

The community is encouraged to get involved and enter a float, car, truck or some other entry into the parade.

As the parade wraps up, everyone gathers at the sound stage at Town Hole Park for a pep rally featuring fall sports teams including the McDonald County High School football team and coaches, as well as performances by the marching band and cheerleaders. The parade and bonfire is being hosted by the McDonald County Booster Club.

Besides the pep-rally atmosphere, organizers say people will be able take in some shopping deals during the street fair before the parade, hosted by the Anderson Betterment Club.

"We're encouraging the business owners along Main Street to keep their doors open late that night and offer specials," said Ken Schutten with the Anderson Betterment Club. "We also have some areas set aside for off Main Street businesses to set up booths to offer their products to the crowd."

Along with the shopping specials, organizers also say plenty of food will be available that night.

"Different businesses and organizations will be selling burgers, kettle corn, and other great food. You'll want to come hungry!" Schutten said.

"Hopefully, it's a time when people can meet each other down on Main Street, walk around, visit, shop, enjoy the community and show their support for our kids, " said Schutten.

The celebration wraps up at 8 p.m. with a bonfire at Town Hole Park.
