Special to McDonald County Press

On Sept. 19, 33 4-H members spent the day cleaning trash from the Elk River in McDonald County. This community service effort was the result of a team of teens who wanted to make a difference.

Earlier in the year, three young men had attended the 4-H Youth Civic Leaders Summit. At this statewide event the youth learned how to be leaders in their communities. Each county team went home with a plan to help their county in some way.

Eli Jones, Aaron Thacker and Taylor Thacker, all from McDonald County, decided they would get a group of 4-H friends together to do a river cleanup. The young men advertised this fun work day to 4-H youth across the southwest region of Missouri.

They contacted River Ranch, a local canoe outfitter, which donated the use of 15 canoes. They received a $200 donation from the YCLS conference to purchase food and drinks for their workers.

After five hours of floating, there were two large trash bins and five 50-gallon barrels full of trash, including bottles, cans, tires -- and a destroyed port-a-potty! The volunteer workers had a great time, and the whole county benefited by the service of this group.

Community service is a big part of 4-H. Across Missouri, these types of events are happening. They teach young people that helping others is important. As one youth pointed out, "The truth is, great leaders serve!"
