Water Project Completed; Replacing 'Leaning Tower Of Moss' Considered

Brandon Forcum, utilities supervisor, told the Anderson City Council that the new water line to the Moss community was completed May 15, including hook-up to a pressure tank that provides water service to the area.

But it was that pressure tank that Alderman Gene Cantrell said needs to be replaced in order to complete the improvements to the Moss community.

He said the existing tank is leaking and leaning like it is the "Leaning Tower of Moss" and needs to be fixed. He said with the broken foundation it is sitting on, it is an accident waiting to happen.

The council agreed for Forcum to get prices for a new pressure tank and foundation to present to the board.

Forcum said the water department is ready to move to its next line replacement projects, including installing a two-inch line south of town and replacement of two inch lines in the area of Mill and Beaver streets.

He said he checked prices for renting the equipment necessary for installing the lines and it will cost $4,000 a month. Forcum said the city might want to look a renting with an option to buy. Cantrell suggested renting the equipment for a couple of months first before deciding to make a purchase.

Asbestos Cleanup

The council agreed to hire an environmental cleanup firm from Stella to cleanup the remains of the old Harnar Boarding Home that recently burned. Mayor John Sellers said the cost would total $10,000. The city agreed to split the cost with Aaron Wolff, who is considering purchasing the property, or the original owners of the property, Michael and Krystal Bourg.

Sellers said the $10,000 price was about half of a previous bid he had received.

Sellers also said the new owner of the former Hometown Hardware property that also burned hopes to begin cleanup in a couple of months.

Street Closing

The council agreed to close Roark Street at Third Street due to a dangerous intersection and how narrow the streets are. Police Chief Donavon Pierson said he will get "No Through Traffic" and "Street Closed" signs for the streets.

Annexation

The council set a public hearing for 6 p.m. Monday, June 29, regarding the proposed voluntary annexation of the Walmart Neighborhood Market.

The council also requested that Pierson check about getting the speed limit lowered on Highway 76 in the area of the store and Indian Trail Road.

Other Business

Alderman Rusty Wilson asked about getting a basketball goal installed at the Bob Corcoran Sports Complex.

Bills in the amount of $82,038.80 were approved for payment.
