We all know that If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, they will inevitably ask for a glass of milk to wash it down. But recently, local preschoolers discovered just what can happen If You Give a Pig a Pancake.

On Friday, May 8, students from McDonald County High School's Child Development class participated in Anderson Head Start's annual Literacy Carnival.

High school students were divided into groups and asked to pick a beloved children's book to read aloud to the younger kids. The students' teacher, Mrs. Shaffer, additionally challenged them to create a supplemental activity that inspired development within the kids, either socially, emotionally, intellectually or physically.

Each group devised a game that revisited the story's theme while also increasing the overall comprehension of the books being read. The classic tale, "Goodnight Moon," depicts a bunny's bedtime routine. The reading was followed by an obstacle course where kids were required to move from one station, marked with an item from the story, to the next, by doing various exercises.

Another favorite, "Down By the Cool of the Pool," follows a frog on the search to find out if the other animals near the water can dance like he does. Along the way, he discovers that although everyone dances differently, they each have their own unique abilities. Afterwards, kids were invited to partake in a game of Musical Lilly Pads.

Popular storybook character, Pete the Cat, made multiple appearances during the day but really got gears turning in the children's minds with the adventure, "Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons." While wearing his favorite shirt, Pete the Cat loses a button. One by one, Pete lost buttons while the kids actively calculated how many remained. Eventually, he loses his last button. Or so he thinks, until he learns that one button of his will never fall off...his belly button.

With the help of MCHS's Child Development class, kids at Anderson's Head Start ended the year in a flurry of laughs, lily pads and learning.
