Funding Needed For Tire Disposal

Dear Editor:

Greetings. My name is David Milligan, project manager for the McDonald County Litter Control/Recycle Program.

Those who have been following our Facebook posts have probably seen enough and know there is a problem with tires. It's important enough that a letter writing campaign, addressed to our state legislature is needed. I am asking all McDonald County residents for a few minutes of their time to write about how dumped tires effect our counties appearance and can create a health hazard.

The problem is that funding for tire disposal is almost non-existent. Two years ago we had a tire round-up throughout the county in which we disposed of two semi trailers and numerous other trailers filled with used tires. According to DNR, that was a one-time opportunity which won't be available again. The rational being once picked up, there should be no more loose tires and responsibility would be on those that generate them to be disposed of properly. Tires are beginning to accumulate once again and tire dumps are appearing throughout the county.

I am finishing up an investigation that should implicate two persons from the southwest Missouri area. We are approaching the problem from two angles, discourage dump sites and finding a way for disposal.

The only way we will get additional funding would be through appropriation in our state legislature. We can accept the new landscaping or do something about it. We should choose to fix the problem and I'm sincerely asking for your help. We may be able to obtain funding by making our situation known. You know the saying, "the loudest bird gets fed." If you know/hear of any dump sites, please call us at 417-223-5050 and leave a message. I check them everyday and will respond directly. Please write a short letter and check out our Facebook page at McDonald County Litter Control. Like and share it please. Thank you for your valuable time. Have a great day and stay safe!

Please forward all letters to the McDonald County Courthouse, ATTN: David Milligan, P.O. Box 665 Pineville, MO 64856 or email them to [email protected] and I will compile and forward them together. Thank you again for caring about our special part of the state! Together we can change our situation for good.
