Mustang Athletes Honored At Winter Sports Banquet

McDonald County High School honored its winter sports teams at a banquet held Monday night at MCHS.

Recaps of the boys and girls basketball and wrestling seasons, along with awards to members of those teams and the MCHS cheerleaders were presented by the teams' head coaches.

The winter sports teams all had good seasons. The girls basketball team won a district championship and the boys made the finals of the district tournament. Three members of the wrestling team earned state medals.

Girls Basketball

Coach Blake Short said the 2014-2015 season, which included the Lady Mustangs' first district title since 2007, will be one he never forgets.

The Lady Mustangs finished the season with a 20-8 record.

Awards were presented as follows: Preslea Reece, four-year commitment, most steals, leading rebounder and MVP; Coley Ickes, four-year commitment, most assists, most steals, best free throw percentage and MVP; Cendy Garcia, four-year commitment and Mustang Award; Abbey Dozal, four-year commitment; Baili Nelson, best field goal percentage; Dakota Bunch, defensive player of the year and most improved; Cheyenne Greenup, sixth man award.

Also, Reece and Ickes, received their first team all-district awards.

Boys Basketball

A thrilling overtime win over Carl Junction in the district semifinals highlighted the 2014-2015 boys basketball season.

A loss to Carthage in the championship game dropped the Mustangs to 15-12 for the season.

Awards were presented as follows: Jake Wood, four-year commitment and Mustang Award; Damian Monsalvo, four-year commitment and Mustang Award; Austin Grotts, four-year commitment and field goal percentage leader; Drew Harmon, MVP, assist leader and steals leader; Daton Aubrey, rebound leader and free throw percentage leader; and Max Dill, three-point percentage leader.

Wrestling

The 2014-2015 wrestling season was highlighted when all three McDonald County High School wrestlers who qualified for state were able to win medals at the 2015 state tournament.

Josh Kinser was fourth, Daniel DeSantiago was fifth and Jakob Gerow took sixth.

Awards were presented as follows: Josh Kinser, four-year commitment, most outstanding wrestler and most pins; Kipper Dalton, four-year commitment; Andrew Coberley, four-year commitment; Truman Craig, coach's award and most pins; Daniel DeSantiago, most improved and academic all-state; Jakob Gerow, most wins, most takedowns and top newcomer; and Timber Bowers, most outstanding junior varsity wrestler.

Cheerleading

Awards were presented as follows: Chelsea Farmer, four-year commitment, best all around and most dedicated; Kierstan Porter, four-year commitment and best teammate; Hannah Vaughn, best tumbler and best base; Maci Tinsley, best flyer; Hailey Branson, most improved; Katelyn Clark, best back spot; Payton Frossard, best jumps; Alexa Dudley, best facials/smile; and Carlie Dill, hardest worker.
