Sobriety Checkpoint Leads To Arrests

At a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Pineville on Saturday, July 25, by the Missouri Highway Patrol, troopers stopped 420 vehicles, encountered 64 traffic violations and made 13 arrests -- 11 of which were for driving while intoxicated.

"The objective of DWI enforcement projects is to deter drinking and driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and impaired driving will not be tolerated," said Troop D's commanding officer, Capt. Juan Villanueva, in a press release following the checkpoint.

In 2014 alone, 205 people were killed in Missouri and 3,372 injured in crashes involving an impaired driver.

Among the various enforcement contacts, nine were for driver's license violations, seven for seat belt violations, and six for non-moving violations.

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are not at the time of the traffic crash. The Missouri Highway Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
