Council Approves Repairing Marshal's Vehicle

Mayor Gregg Sweeten addressed Chris Owens, Pineville marshal, at the City Council meeting July 14 regarding damages to his marshal's vehicle due to it being rammed and shot at on July 13.

Owens was chasing Christopher Lee Hood, who was the subject of a manhunt that started a few days earlier in Bentonville, Ark.

Owens said the Hood was heading for Pineville, driving sporadically and running people off the road. When Owens caught up with him, Hood shot at Owens three times. Owens said he had to bail out of his car in an attempt to avoid the shots.

Owens said a lot of law enforcement from Benton County, Ark., assisted in apprehending Hood, and U.S. Marshals were involved.

Owens said Hood shot himself and that no law enforcement personnel were injured during the chase. Owens said the last he heard is that Hood was on life support. (Hood, 39, died July 16. See related story on this page.)

Sweeten discussed with Owens the approximate amount for repairing the vehicle.

Sweeten said he has prices on cameras for the marshal's vehicle as well as body cameras. Owens said the top priority is to purchase those items needed for safety for the marshal's office.

The Board approved spending $3,030 out of the budget for the Marshal's Department for damage repair and cameras.
