Committee Unhappy With Cemetery Appearance

The Lanagan City Council was addressed by Rose Peck, cemetery committee member, who said she has received several phone calls regarding the poor condition of the cemetery.

Peck told the council that during mowing, grass is going on the head stones and the Round Up treatment got out of hand this year, resulting in an extremely poor appearance. She pointed out that the cemetery is a "perpetual thing" -- that it is always going to be there.

Mayor Pro-Tem Stan Haywood said that this was the first year for the city to do the work instead of bidding out the mowing. He said "It will get better next year." He added "We'll look at it this winter and we will correct this."

He said that an average of $1,500-$1,600 is received per year in donations for cemetery maintenance. The mayor suggested that bags be placed on the mowers to prevent grass from getting on the head stones.

Water Issue

Ruth Morales expressed disappointment to the council regarding how she had been treated regarding an issue with a tenant renting her property. She said she came to the city and asked the water be shut off due to the tenant's non-payment of rent.

Haywood explained that it is illegal for landlords to deprive tenants of utilities. He said someone went ahead and shut off the water, but it wasn't the city. He said there is a witness to who shut off the water. Morales, who previously was given summons to court, was also given a copy of the current water ordinance.

Parks

The parks superintendent pointed out that a water leak at the park needs to be fixed and suggested that a walking trail be added to the park.

Law Enforcement/Court

It was confirmed that tickets can now be paid online rather than having to go to court.

Administration

It was discussed that some old bad debts need to be written off, but even if they are, the record stays in the system. Haywood said that raises will be given to some city employees.

Open Time

It was suggested by Alderman Jason Helmer that a city website be established to include all pertinent information for the public. Helmer said he is willing to design and build the website for free. Motion was approved to build the website.
