All fishermen, both novice and seasoned, cast their lines in hope of reeling in a "whopper."

Some pursue this optimistic wish without realizing their aspiration. On the other hand, sisters Sidney and Bailey Tyson, of Anderson both captured the dream of "landing a big one" early last month. As a result of their fishing skills, with a little added luck, the girls were recognized by the Missouri Department of Conservation as official Master Anglers.

The title "Master Angler" is given to individuals who catch memorable fish in Missouri. To qualify, fish must meet the minimum weight or length requirements for specific species. Length requirements are included to promote and accommodate catch and release fishing. Fish must be caught by legal methods conforming to provision of the Missouri Wildlife Code. Potential recipients must complete a registration form to qualify.

The two girls defied the odds of not only qualifying for the Master Angler award as sisters, but they did it within a couple days of each other. To make this feat even more unique and uncommon, Sidney actually qualified for the award twice with different species. Bailey's qualifying largemouth bass was 24 inches long, weighing just one ounce short of seven pounds. Sidney's fish included a 23-inch long largemouth bass, weighing in at six pounds, two ounces and and a three pound, 11 ounce white crappie with a length of 18 and seventh-eighths inches. All three fish were released for future fishermen to enjoy.

The award applications were confidentially submitted by the local organization Young Outdoorsmen United when they learned of the girl's successes. The sisters had no idea they had qualified or were receiving the certificates.

"We are very surprised," said 16-year-old Bailey.

Sidney, 18, said "I knew the crappie was good-sized, but did not realize it would be that big of a deal."

The framed award certificates, along with commemorative lapel pins, were presented by Ernie Smith and Dan Fuller, of Young Outdoorsmen United at the Tyson home during Labor Day weekend.

"It's inspiring to see young gals enjoying the outdoors," Fuller said. "We hope your recognition will encourage other girls to do the same."

Both teenagers have been active in the outdoors all their lives and were very modest of their accomplishment.
