Pineville Council Approves Purple Heart City Designation

The Pineville City Council voted July 22 for the city to be distinguished as a Purple Heart City in honor of veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart medal in recognition of their being wounded or killed by the enemy while serving in the Armed Forces.

The designation was requested by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, who will present the city a plaque at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 in recognition of the city becoming a Purple Heart City.

As of June 30, there were 25 cities and nine counties that have received the special designation. Also I-70 and I-44 are designated as Purple Heart Trails with work ongoing to include I-49.

Traffic Concerns

Alderman Scott Dennis raised a concern on 8th Street, just east of Pineville Elementary and Junior High School. He said the street needs to be striped because of how narrow the street is at the top of the hill.

He said traffic heading towards town from Big Sugar Creek Road cross a one-lane bridge that puts them in the middle of the road, where they remain while they top the hill. He said there is going to be a wreck if something isn't done.

It was noted the street is only 18-feet wide at the top of the hill, but it cannot be widened due to several large trees.

Alderman Ann Kresyman had similar concerns about Rhine Street, due to the curves, suggesting striping might help.

Other Business

The council approved a bid of $2,500 for 22 pallets of sod for the area in front of the new bathrooms, bandstand and cook shack on the square.

Bills in the amount of $138,557.50 were approved for payment. It was noted that about $70,000 was for paving and $50,000 was for the construction projects.
