Year Gets Off To Tragic Start

As the suns sets on 2014, we take a look back at the year from the view of the headlines.

The year had a little bit of everything, including a record setting winter. The year got off to bad start with four deaths in the first nine days due to a motor vehicle wreck and a house fire.

Below is the recap of the first six months of the year. Next week we will look at the last six months.

Jan. 2 -- The McDonald County School District is named to the AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Roll;

Jan. 2 -- Sisters from Bentonville, Ark. are killed in a wreck on Highway 71 just south of Route H in Pineville;

Jan. 9 -- A man and wife die in a fire at their mobile home east of Anderson;

Jan. 9 -- The winter of 2013-2014 continues to pound the area with a fresh six inch snow;

Jan. 9 -- A woman was beaten and then abducted in a home invasion in eastern McDonald County;

Jan. 16 -- A man and woman are charged with parental kidnapping of their six-month-old baby; the child was located safely in Florida after the Anderson Police Department issued an Amber Alert;

Jan. 16 -- Corey Henry is named football coach at McDonald County High School;

Jan. 23 -- Crowder College dedicates the James B. Tatum Hall at Crowder McDonald County in Jane;

Jan. 30 -- A four-wheeler wreck in Noel claims the life of an 11-year-old boy;

Jan. 30 -- McDonald County passes a $8.7 million (excluding 911) budget for 2014;

Feb. 6 -- Powell man is arrested in Southwest City following a two-state pursuit and manhunt after fleeing from a traffic stop in Noel;

Feb. 20 -- MCHS wrestlers Daniel DeSantiago and Josh Kinser qualify for the state wrestling tournament;

Feb. 27 -- A Jane man is charged with abuse of a child resulting in death after a four-month-old dies;

March 6 -- Another big snow, this time 8-10 inches, caps off winter in grand style;

March 13 -- The former president of the Pineville PTO is arrested and charged with stealing nearly $20,000 of the organization's funds;

March 20 -- A shake up in the Goodman Fire Department includes the resignation of the board chairman and the resignation of longtime chief;

March 27 -- A man was found to have acted in self-defense in the stabbing death of an acquaintance at an Anderson residence;

March 27 -- Ross and Vicki Babbitt receive the Heart of Education Award for their support of the McDonald County School District;

April 10 -- John Sellers and Gregg Sweeten win mayoral races in Anderson and Pineville, respectively;

April 17 -- An Anderson man claims his voting rights were violated when he was denied a vote in the city election in Anderson;

May 1 -- A car wreck on Route H results in the death of an Rogers, Ark., woman; the driver of the vehicle is charged with vehicular homicide;

May 8 -- The state of Missouri sues the city of Lanagan for the balance of the cost of a 2011 audit that was done after a enough city residents signed a petition requesting the state perform the service;

May 22 -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol is asked to investigate two separate incidents at the McDonald County Sheriff's Office; the investigation leads to the resignation of the chief deputy;

May 29 -- Junior Stephens, of Anderson, is accepted to take part in the Honor Flight program and a tour of Washington, D.C.;

June 5 -- A man being treated at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin while in custody of the McDonald County Sheriff's Department is caught a short time after eluding a McDonald County deputy;

June 5 -- Courtni Smith, a senior at MCHS, wins a state championship in the triple jump with her final jump in her high school career;

June 12 -- Tim Kilby named principal at Noel Elementary and Junior High School after spending all but one year since 1988 at Noel in a variety of roles;

June 12 -- Flash flood in Anderson results in three vehicles being washed away and one house to be flooded;

June 19 -- Angie Brewer, a 1992 graduate of MCHS, is named assistant superintendent of the McDonald County School District; and

June 26 -- Goodman Fire District to face state audit following successful petition drive.
