Cheyenne Chappie and Paige Jones gave up just one run each in four innings to lift the McDonald County High School softball team past East Newton and Nevada in a three-team scrimmage held Saturday at McDonald County High School.

Chappie held the Patriots without a baserunner until the fourth and final inning when East Newton put together two hits and an error to score its only run in McDonald County's 7-1 win.

Jones was equally as effective in the Lady Mustangs' 4-1 win over Nevada.

"I was really pleased with our effort," said coach Tray Shaddox. "I thought defense was pretty solid. Our pitchers threw strikes and we got some timely hits. We did make a couple of mistakes, but when we did make a mistake, we didn't compound it by making another mistake right behind it."

Leading hitters on the day included Coley Ickes, Hanna Schmit and Rachel Brown.

"Coley stroked it well, Rachel hit pretty well, Chayleigh McCool had a big double and Hanna hit the ball hard a couple of times," Shaddox said of his leading hitters. "Overall, I was pretty well pleased with how we did for our first time out in a game situation."

The Lady Mustangs open the 2014 season for real Aug. 26 when they host Nevada.
