MCHS Student Arrested Following Search By Drug Dogs

A student at McDonald County High School was recently arrested following a search of the parking lot by drug dogs from the Benton County (Arkansas) Sheriff's Department.

According to McDonald County Sheriff Mike Hall, Kathy L Briggs, 17, of Anderson, was arrested after a search of Briggs' car revealed a small amount of marijuana along with some marijuana seeds. The vehicle, along with three others, were "hit" on by one of the two dogs used to search the parking lot and several of the outbuildings on the campus at MCHS.

Hall said nothing was found in the other vehicles that were identified by the dogs, but one was identified as a car that came to a house on Rains Road a few days earlier while officers were executing a search warrant due to expected marijuana sales at the residence.

He said one of the other cars was also believed to have marijuana smoked inside while a third was just purchased a day or two before the search.

"Daniel (Daniel Gardner, school resource officer) has been talking with school officials about getting dogs to do a search," Hall said. "We don't have any dogs in the county now, but Benton County does training on Tuesdays and they said they would love to come up and do it. It was originally planned for the Tuesday before the bust on Rains Road, but they were busy. Coming when they did, it worked out nice."

Hall said in addition to the high school, the dogs searched the locker rooms at Anderson Middle School, with nothing found.

"We are hoping to keep doing this every so often," Hall said. "We will be doing the other junior highs when we have a chance."
