County Board Of Education Hires Transportation, Maintenance Directors

The McDonald County Board of Education voted unanimously March 14 to hire a transportation director and maintenance director for the 2013-2014 school year.

Roger Stites was named as director of transportation while Bob Campbell was selected as director of maintenance.

In the past, both of those positions were filled as an assistant superintendent position, held by Dick Davis, who is retiring this year,

The Universal Breakfast Program was approved at Southwest City Elementary, Noel Elementary and Noel Primary schools for the rest of the school year.

The federal program provides free breakfast to all students, regardless of their household income. Breakfast is given free to any student who wants it and the school receives a federal reimbursement for that student based on program guidelines.

Assistant Superintendent Dick Davis said he choose those three schools because of the number of students on free and reduced lunches. He said the district would “not go in the hole” by piloting the program there. He said it would take 468 breakfasts served per day to break even.Anna Barton, representing Opaa! Food Service, the school district’s food service provider, said the company will guarantee the district not to lose any money on the program.

Dr. Mark Stanton, superintendent, presented the amended school calendar for the balance of the 2012-2013 school year. Due to missing three days for bad weather, the district will add May 17, May 20 and May 21 to the calendar as school days.

The board also approved a letter of intent insuring it will use Control Technology Solutions for energy efficient facility improvements, including the expansion of the library at the high school. The library will be expanded to the area that formerly housed administrative off ces.

Judy Harper, principal at Anderson Elementary School, presented a video highlighting the school’s “Business Buddy” program. The school partners with 35 businesses from the community that provide volunteer services.

The board approved the gifted program evaluation report presented by Dr. Cindy Machado and Kristi Schlessman and the special education evaluation report presented by Machado and Linda Patterson.

In other business, the board:

◊approved the Network for Educator Effectiveness System;

◊accepted the mowing bid from All-American Lawn care;

◊approved the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and Opaa! for summer food service;

◊voted to purchase a 30-passenger bus for the Early Childhood Special Education program at a cost of $89,470; and,

◊approved bills in the amount of $1,047,103.80.
